I'm an American who had an intense long distance relationship with a man in the Middle East for 1-1/2 years. We were in contact many hours every day. In that time, not one day went by without a substantial amount of contact. Having spent so many hours talking together, we were both 100% certain we knew each other fully. We were both wildly in love and happily agreed to marry. This summer we met in a country we chose as our honeymoon location. We saw each other face to face for the first time in an airport, married that same day and began what was to be our beautiful honeymoon month alone together. Within the first week we came to the shocking realization we didn't know each other nearly as well as we thought we did. By the end of that month, we didn't even like each other. We had both been in love with what turned out to be only a fantasy. Originally our next step after the honeymoon was going to be the spouse immigration process for him to live with me in the USA. He went back to his life and I went back to mine without any further mention of this next step. We haven't come to a conclusion yet about what we'll do. The moral of this sad story is; no matter how much you're in love with your long distance sweetheart, no matter how well you think you know each other...when you meet face to face, do it with the understanding that your time together will be for the purpose of getting to know each other better. Purchase open ended plane tickets so you're both free to leave earlier than planned if you wish, and DON'T plan to marry during that first time together!
